Artwatch Africa (of Arterial Network) and World Poetry Movement (WPM) partner WS80/ICE to celebrate Wole Soyinka in July.
One of the major events of the WS80 International Cultural Exchange Programme (WS80/ICE) is the “Dialogue through Spoken Word, a poetry event that will parade 80 poets on stage in the course of three days.
With the theme “Freedom of Creative Expression”, headlining the 80 Poets that will feature in the segment titled “Dialogue Through Spoken Word” are international renowned masters of the genre such as Mutabaruka from Jamaica, and Javon Johnson from the United States. They will be joined by leading acts of spoken word and performance poetry in Nigeria such as Sage Hasson; Efe Paul Azino; AJ Dagga Tolar, Titilope Sonuga; Tope Sadiq; Jumoke Verrissimo; Donna; Wanawana, and others.
The segment is coordinated by Efe Paul Azino of Unchained Voices; the Spoken Word event is in partnership with Freedom Hall; and Taruwa.
Specifically for Wole Soyinka @ 80 Birthday Celebration, “Artwatch Africa (a freedom-of-expression arm of the Africa-based cultural advocacy group Arterial Network) is proudly supporting The Open Door Series (producers of the WS80/ICE events), to stage the spoken word and poetry segment of the 80th birthday anniversary of Soyinka, whose work encompassed the values of peace and justice”, stated Peter Rorvik, Secretary General of Arterial Network, in a message to the producers of the birthday events.
With over 450 events in 49 countries already confirmed July is dedicated by the World Poetry Movement (WPM) as a month for its 7th Global Poetic Action, themed A Planet Free of Wars - For Peace, Justice and Poetry.
Coincidentally, July is the birth-month of the 1986 Nobel laureate for literature, Prof. Oluwole Akinwande Soyinka, who will clock the age of 80 on July 13.
“Essentially, Soyinka is a poet as manifested in all of his creative works – Drama, Poetry, Novels, Non-Fictions, Music and in his various public commentaries (as captured under the theme Interventions; and published on a series by BookCraft Publishers, Ibadan). This is why we resolved to honour him -- the first African and Black Nobel laureate in literature -- with a huge poetry project that would parade 80 poets to mark his coming into Octogenarian age,” stated Alhaji Teju Kareem, Executive Producer of The Open Door Series.
Dates: The performances will hold on July 11 – Terra Culture, VI, Lagos; 6.00pm
July 12 University of Lagos, Akoka Yaba; 2.00pm
July 13 & 14 at the Cultural Centre, Kuto- Abeokuta; 4.00pm and 8.00pm
